Dear Parents/Guardians, April 21st, 2010

Due to recent changes in Alabama law regarding the administration of medication, Camp Sumatanga is implementing new guidelines for camper medication(s). These guidelines will take effect immediately. To say the least, these changes are drastic compared to how we have handled medications in the past. However, they are needed in order to provide safety for our campers and to comply with state law.

One of the biggest changes in Sumatanga’s policy is that EVERY medication, prescription and non-prescription (over-the-counter) including vitamins, given at camp, must have a doctor’s SIGNED order and a parent’s SIGNED consent. We have created a new “Individualized Standing Order form for Medications”. This form is available online (www.sumatanga.org) and is part of the camper registration. We have also created a “Medication Guideline” sheet to help parents understand the new law and regulations.

Please understand that if a camper comes to camp with ANY medication or vitamins, they MUST have the form completed and signed by a doctor and a parent/guardian. If the camper does not have the completed form, Sumatanga CANNOT administer ANY medications. Instead, the parent on record will be called and asked to come to camp so they can treat their child. No other adult will be legally allowed to administer medications to a child on camp property.

Another new guideline relates to campers who keep and administer their own medications. Parents/guardians will need to sign the “Self-Administration” authorization found on the bottom (on the 2nd page) of the “Individualized Standing Order” form. If this authorization is not signed, the camper CANNOT keep their own medication(s).

Keeping children safe and healthy is one of Sumatanga’s highest priorities. The new guidelines have been created to protect the health and welfare of campers, staff, and volunteers. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and look forward to serving you.

Sincerely, Walter “Buck” Blackwell, RN Sumatanga Camp Nurse
